So you think your a Christian?

Posted on Thursday, May 21st, 2009 at 7:10pm by SteveNoble

Over 80% of Americans profess to be Christians...yeah, right. Of those "Christians":

  • 50% don't believe the Bible is accurate
  • 40% believe Jesus was a sinner like you and me
  • 40% believe that the Bible, the Koran and the Book of Mormon teach the same truths.

Are the majority of people in America who think they are Christians...not?  How did we get here?  Who is to blame?

That's the hot question on today's show!  What do you think???  Chime in on the BLOG!

christian????

If you call me a christian, it is a complement.
If I call myself a christian,it's wishful thinking, or a lie.

Confused

If you refer to yourself as a Christian because you ARE a disciple of Jesus Christ according to His Word...how can that be wishful thinking or a lie? 1 John tells us that "...these things were written so that you may know you have eternal life." ...unless you are referring to a person who claims "Christianity" yet has no truly biblical basis for doing so. Please help me understand your comments!

wishful thinking?

Wow, your comment makes NO sense! I wouldn't CALL someone a Christian, I would call them by their name. I would say that someone is a brother or sister in Christ to their face as an acknowledgement of us being adopted into the same family and having a "spiritual" connection as a term of endearment. How on earth can you be lying if you say, truthfully, that you ARE indeed a Christian, a child of God? That makes absolutely no sense! Besides, if you CALL yourself a Christian, and you're not, then you're a liar, and we know that, generally speaking, Christians don't dive into the sin of lying.

Foolishness

How in the world could anyone ever think that our Lord and Savior was a sinner? And who are we to say or even think that the Word of God is wrong? I was saved on Easter Sunday in 2008. I am still a sinner but I know the Bible says only through Jesus Christ can a man enter the Kingdom of Heaven. This is written and God sent HIS SON to save idiots like those whom think the above listings. I feel sorry for those who don't believe and feel that way. I guess they will find out on judgement day! God Bless all of you!!

Jesus a sinner?

Simple...these people don't have a CLUE what the Bible says! Blame their churches or their parents, but they are going to be held responsible for what they CHOOSE to know. I used to get mad about these people - now I just get sad. Don't assume churchgoers are saved...most of them aren't! SHARE THE GOSPEL WITH EVERYONE!

This world we live in, is

This world we live in, is getting worse every day; for Christianity to be accepted has to be "Light" or other wise is rejected; but if you are reached/approached by any other religion you are forced to do all the things they tell you or you are rejected. While on Christianity God gives you the opportunity to summit to His ruling by love sake to Him, not by force and it still is not the first choice people makes they seem to like the bad ways, by force, for obligation, God loves us so much and we demonstrate no love to Him, we want all in our terms no on His. Is sad to see this results, and we are to blame, by not standing true to our savior, and and preaching the full gospel, and following all his commandments.
every time Christianity is attack we remain silent for fear to be politically incorrect and rejected by the world.

Great topic

Steve...great topic. Make the gospel clear so everyone knows what it means to have saving faith!

I am a Christian for the

I am a Christian for the same reason most every other Christian is: I was raised in a Christian family.

I am sure that if Jesus existed he was a human being just like you or me. Well, maybe not like Steve Noble. I doubt Jesus was THAT obnoxious.

no kidding, Boris

This MUST be a post from Boris the Awesome Atheist...note how much he dislikes us Christians, although he always denies that he hates us (just read his other postings). Being a Christian is NOT passed down, of course. We will each stand at the Judgment Seat by ourselves...we EACH need to make our own decision to accept the gift (I did), or flat out reject the gift (like Boris has, so far). As far as Jesus being a "man" - He was both fully Man & fully God. On one point I do agree with Boris the Awesome Atheist...Jesus was definitely NOT an obnoxious sinner like me...PRAISE THE LORD!

Nice reading comprehension

Nice reading comprehension skills, Steve. I said I am a Christian, not an atheist. Being a Christian is passed down. My parents taught me Christianity just like yours did. I say the prayers myself, of course and the free will is mine, but if we had been born in Pakistan we'd be Muslims most likely. We weren't; we were born in WASP USA so we're Christians.

Who is Boris?

Your Brother in Christ,
Barney

A lot of people claim to be Christians

Barney,

Saying "I am a Christian for the same reason most every other Christian is: I was raised in a Christian family" sounded to me like a sarcastic (and incorrect) statement used by those who want to reject the Bible. These people make the argument the Bible can't be true or if it is, God isn't fair because some people were born at the wrong place and the wrong time to believe. But God ordained when and where we would live (see Acts 17:26). Even if your statement was correct, God, as creator, has every right to choose those he will save, and said to Moses “I will have mercy on whom I have mercy” (Rom 9:15, Ex. 33:19).

Your statement was incorrect because it ignores (a) the fact that 75% of youth raised in the church leave and never come back, and (b) the growth of the church in other countries where people are coming to Christ in spite of rejection by their families as a result.

Doug, your facts gotta be

Doug, your facts gotta be wrong. Sorry. Where did all the Christians in the USA come from?

No, what we disagree about isn't that we were raised Christian. We disagree about who we consider to be Christians.
I am what you (and I assume you are of the Steve Noble ilk) would refer to as a nominal Christian. I don't believe the Bible literally true and I don't think we need to.

Yes, I take exception to Noble's fundamentalism and his obnoxious style and I use sarcasm to answer sarcasm (or just because). Sorry, but he invited me here to comment so I availed myself.

best,
Barney

P.S. if i assume incorrectly I apologize

Christians in the USA

There have been several studies suggesting that a high percentage (some lower and some higher than 75%) of students leave the church after high school. With regards to the church in other countries, I said the church is growing in many places where people are rejected by their families. I'm not sure which of those things you are trying to refute.

Studies have shown 80% of people who trust Christ do so before they are 18, so it is only logical that it is more likely for someone to come to a saving faith if they are introduced to it while they are still young. Having said that, we are not always talking about the same people when we say the word "christian. Not everyone who claims to be a Christian actually is. I talk to many self-professed "christians" who often cannot explain what they believe or know whether they will be going to heaven, and many think they will go to heaven because they do good or were baptized or went to church every Sunday.

BTW, If you are accusing me of believing the Bible to be true, then I am guilty as charged.

Doug, I am saying most folks

Doug, I am saying most folks claim the same religion as their parents. You can say that they leave the church later, or that they aren't really Christians because (fill in your fundie theology here), but that just proves my point. It also proves my second point that what you really disagree with is folks like me (Bible doubters) identifying themselves as Christian.
